My unusual path to higher education taught me the importance of teaching to each student’s individual potential.
My Educational Journey
Growing up in Texas, I had a really tough time as a student. I had a handful of learning and behavioral issues that made me a difficult student to have in the classroom. So difficult that by the 1st grade I had the distinct impression from my teacher, Mrs. Prill, who has permanently moved my desk to the corner, that I was dumb and broken. I believed that lie for the next 22 years.
But then at age 28, the clouds parted and a ray of light shone down on my cerebral cortex. It really was a lightbulb moment when I suddenly thought: Hey, maybe I'm ready to go to college. I enrolled not knowing what to expect, and by the second week I realized the truth: I had the potential to develop my intellectual abilities and achieve much greater things than what everyone expected of me.
Brookdale Community College was where I started having, for the first time in my life, positive educational experiences. After just one year, my hippocampus had stored so many positive associations that I started thinking about transferring to a 4-year school. It was then that my Women's History professor, Jane Scimeca, recommended dreaming a little bigger. Like, as big as I could possibly imagine. I wasn't picking up on her hints so she finally just said, "Why not apply to Columbia?" Without her support, I would never have thought to make such a leap in what I expected of myself.
3 years later I graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor's in women's and gender studies cum laude and with departmental honors. My time at Columbia was incredible for my personal development and completely changed the course of my life.
Every class with a student is an opportunity to be a source of encouragement and direction for using their English in dynamic and successful ways. It is my pleasure to listen carefully and build a path forward with manageable steps toward their highest potential.
